FAQs MICRO RFID Tags

What RFID readers work with the MICRO series?

The MICRO series tags are all standard passive UHF (Ultra High Frequency) tags that comply with EPCglobal Gen2v2 and ISO 18000-63 standards, also referred to as RAIN RFID.

A wide range of fixed and handheld RFID readers is available, with frequencies and antenna polarization matching the tags’ to ensure compatibility and optimal performance.

What are the maximum temperatures for RFID tags?

Industrial RFID tags are specifically engineered to operate within a wide temperature range to withstand harsh environments, with maximum temperatures depending on the specific type of the tag.

Xerafy’s industrial RFID tags can typically reach 70-85C, with specialty products going higher:

250C – ROSWELL series for Oil and Gas industry, MICRO Industrial and Paint Shop for Manufacturing

230C – XSKIN Theta for injection molding

220C – XS Wedge

200C – MICRO Heat

It’s also worth noting that while some RFID tags can withstand high temperatures, they may not function optimally at these extreme temperatures:

Operating temperatures refer to the ranges within which the RFID chip will respond.

Application temperatures indicate the ranges the RFID tag has been tested for survivability.

It is recommended to select RFID tags specifically designed and tested for the temperature range of the intended application to ensure reliable and accurate performance.

Are there waterproof RFID tags?

Yes, waterproof RFID tags are designed to be resistant to water and moisture, making them suitable for use in outdoor or wet environments.

They can be made of different materials, such as engineered plastic or silicone, and come with an IP (for Ingress Protection, with the first number referring to protection against solids, and the second number referring to protection against water) rating.

The most common IP ratings for industrial RFID tags are:

  • IP54 – Against contamination from limited amounts of dust and other particles, and water sprays from all directions.
  • IP68 – Against immersion.
  • IP69k – Dustproof and can withstand pressurized washdown at high temperatures.

It is recommended to carefully consider the environmental conditions in which the tag will be used and test the selected tags accordingly.

Can RFID tags withstand acid and alkali?

Yes, industrial RFID tags are engineered to withstand acid and alkali to varying degrees depending on their construction materials and the specific type and concentration of acid or alkali.

Some acid or alkali may corrode or damage the tag over time, while others may have little to no effect. It is recommended to carefully consider the environmental conditions in which the tag will be used and test the selected tags accordingly.

Do RFID tags come with memory?

Yes, some RFID tags do come with memory, such as the Xerafy MICRO RFID tags.

RFID tags can be categorized into two main types: read-only and read-write. Read-only tags have pre-programmed data that cannot be changed or erased, while read-write tags have user memory that can be read from and written to by RFID readers.

The amount of memory available in an RFID tag can vary depending on the tag’s type, frequency, and size. Some RFID tags have only a few bytes of memory, while others have several kilobytes.

The memory in RFID tags can be used to store information such as product codes, serial numbers, customer information, and manufacturing data. This information can be read by RFID readers, allowing businesses to track and manage their inventory, monitor supply chains, and improve their operations.

Can RFID tags perform on metal surfaces?

Yes, there are RFID tags specifically designed to perform on metal surfaces. Metal interferes with RFID signals, causing problems with readability and accuracy when using ordinary RFID tags on metal assets.

Industrial RFID tags like the Xerafy MICRO series use a design that overcomes this issue. They use antennas designed to work on metal surfaces. Their smaller and more compact design than traditional RFID antennas allows for them to be placed near the metal surface without interference. Additionally, Xerafy tags use various other techniques to improve their performance on metal surfaces, such as orientation optimization.

In practice, Xerafy RFID tags are used in a wide range of applications where traditional RFID tags would not be effective. For example, they can be used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and oil and gas, where metal surfaces are common and traditional RFID tags would not work well.
